37 Ft Motor Sailer, Design #108Construction: Double or triple skin on bent frames |
In recent years we have drawn several of these husky motor sailers. For comfortable coastal cruising they are hard to beat. The large wheelhouse, inside steering, and diesel heater make travelling easy and enjoyable even when the weather is wet and cold. The large simple rig eases the motion and makes passages under sail possible when the wind is fair. This is a large and intricate piece of work and is probably at the limit of what would be manageable for a single-handed builder. It is a fascinating construction project and a lovely little ship. (The design was published in WoodenBoat, January/February 1999.) Photos of the boat under construction are in the Owner's Album. |

42 Ft Motor Sailer, Design #129Construction: Triple skin on laminated frames |
This 42 foot design is the latest in a family of comfortable motor sailers intended for use in the Pacific Northwest. While it shares many of the features of designs #108 and #114, including large heated deckhouse and inside steering, this one has a finer, deeper hull and a powerful rig. Performance under sail should be much better than the husky workboat appearance suggests. Construction is fully glued, triple skin planking over laminated frames. |

45 Ft Gaff-Rigged Motor Sailer "Dakota", Design #114Construction: Strip planked/Cold molded |
This design was commissioned by an Alaskan builder who wanted a comfortable floating home with the capability to carry him south to avoid the long, dark winters. He needed a light and airy interior, inside steering, good visibility, a reliable engine, and an efficient galley. Construction:The plan is drawn for glued construction, which the owner will do in yellow cedar. Planking is one layer of 7/8-inch strip planking followed by one diagonal layer of 1/4-inch planking and another 1/4-inch layer fore and aft. Total: 1 3/8 inches of planking. Sheer strakes have an extra 1/2 inch of thickness. There is also a 3-inch guard capped with gumwood through the body of the boat.
Frames are 3-inch x 3 3/4-inch on 20-inch centers, laminated and set up before planking. Decks are double skin red or yellow cedar with 2 inches of fitted insulation between the beams. Centerline members are laminated yellow cedar. The engine is a naturally aspirated four cylinder Cummins 80 BHP diesel with 3:1 reduction and a 25-inch three-blade propeller. It is rigged as a gaff ketch, with wooden spars and galvanized steel fittings and deck hardware. |

14.9 metre Motor Sailer Design #158 NewConstruction: cold molded on laminated frames. |
The styling of this large motor sailer has Pacific NW written all over it, but it was actually drawn for use in the Mediterranean. Whether braving the rain and cold of this coast, or the scorching sun in the Med, the comfortable wheelhouse and inside steering will be most welcome. This will be a very easy boat to be aboard with good sailing performance and generous accommodations. The plans are drawn using metric units. |
