Sailboats, Part III

26 Ft Gaff Cutter, Design #116

Construction: Strip planked/cold molded over laminated frames

This simple transom sterned cutter was especially designed for home builders. It is a fairly deep, fine lined hull and should be a good sailer.

Construction is glued wood, consisting of a layer of strip planking over laminated frames on 24-inch centers. This is followed by two layers of cold molded planking, one diagonal and one fore and aft, for a strong, stable structure.

The mast is shown deck stepped in a tabernacle for ease of lowering. Alternatively, it can be keel stepped for added peace of mind. The mast is hollow with a pole topmast to make handling the topsail simple.

The interior layout has three berths, with the head forward in the forecastle, and galley aft. Auxiliary power is a two cylinder diesel.

26 Ft Gaff Cutter, Design #116a

Construction: Carvel on bent frames

A new version of #116 with a more traditional flavour. Construction is carvel on bent frames with a solid laid deck. Hull beam is increased to 9 ft 6 in and the outside ballast reduced slightly to 4200 lbs. The three berth layout is identical to #116 but the extra beam will make this feel like a much bigger boat. A perfect small cruiser and great fun to build.

27 Ft Cruising Canoe Design #102

Construction: Strip planked
The combination of narrow beam and light displacement will make this little boat a delight to sail. Headroom is limited and the accommodations are spartan, but the sailing purist will overlook those deficiencies for the fun of a light fast boat and a well balanced hull.
