More Dinghies and Daysailers

16 ft Sailing Dinghy, Design #128

Construction: Glued clinker plywood

A light, fast sailing dinghy with generous sail area, designed for exciting daysailing. Best performance will be achieved with a crew of two. Large built-in buoyancy tanks make this an ideal family daysailer.

Construction is glued clinker plywood laid up over a jig of temporary molds. Centreboard and rudder blade are laminated wood. Plans are drawn to a scale of 1½ inch = 1 foot and are fully detailed.

16ft Double Ended Sloop #165

Construction: Carvel on bent frames

A recent addition to our list of small daysailers is this lovely half decked double ender in traditional plank on frame construction.

The drawings are heavily detailed and include developments of the stem and sternpost.  The boat is unballasted with a wooden centreboard.

Oars and  rowlocks provide auxiliary power.  This one should be a lot of fun to build and sail.

16 ft Centreboard Lugger, Design #124

Construction: Carvel on bent frames

This is one for the purists. It is based on a traditional British beach boat model and its construction follows traditional practice. It has a beautiful set of lines with a high transom and tight tuck that will be great fun to build.

Performance under sail will not match that of the lighter, beamier dinghies in the catalogue, but nevertheless this is a delightful small daysailer. I have also thought it would be fun to build one of these with a small inboard and omit the centreboard. It would make an interesting small motor sailer.

Plans are drawn 1½ inch = 1 foot.

18 ft Centreboard Sloop, Design #139

Construction: Carvel on bent frame

Anyone seeking an introduction to the carvel method would do well to pause and consider this little boat. Contained here are all the elements of plank on frame boat building at the smallest scale and in a shape that will present few difficulties to the competent woodworker.

The model of a shallow, beamy daysailer is one seen elsewhere in this list - #107 Skylark and #113 Jessie are close relatives. This one is a little longer than her sisters and carries a small amount of outside ballast and an efficient gaff sloop rig.

5.5 Metre Half-Decked Centerboard Gaff Cutter, Design #93

Construction: Cold molded
Plans: Metric measurements

The client for this design needed a racing boat with a traditional look, designed for a lake in Italy where engines were prohibited. This boat needs the weight of two or three crew for optimum performance, particularly in strong winds. It is a fast and very exciting daysailer or club racer.

Sailboats

16ft Centreboard Sloop #161

Construction: Strip planking with glass sheathing inside and out.

This one is for the minimalists, or at least for small boys of any age hungry for that far horizon..  It is a tiny cruising sailboat, but an eminently practical one - simple to built and economical in outlay.

Construction is dead simple - strip planking with glass sheathing inside and out.  There are watertight compartments to keep her afloat in the event of swamping.  The accommodation is cozy but ample
for two on a weekend or for the single hander on longer trips.

18 ft Centerboard Sloop "Spartan II ", Design #164

Construction: Strip planking with glass sheathing inside and out.

A recent reworking of the original 18ft Spartan weekender.  This version is a foot longer with improved hull lines and rig.  This is a light, fast boat with exciting performance.

It can be launched and retrieved easily from a trailer and towed with a small car.  Accommodations are 'spartan' but perfectly adequate for weekending and short cruises.
Construction is as simple as it gets.

19ft Cutter #163

Construction:   Carvel on steam bent frames

The lines of this small cutter are based on a south coast fishing vessel of the 1850s.  It is a close relative of #101 the Itchen Ferry Cutter.

Construction is traditional throughout with carvel planking on steam bent frames, copper fastened.  With its simple decked
layout and small inboard auxiliary, this will be a delightful family daysailer.

20 ft Itchen Ferry Cutter Design #101

Construction: Strip planked with cold molded outer layer
Here is a design that appeared in WoodenBoat magazine, March/April 1998. This is an updated version of a traditional British fishing vessel. It has cruising accommodation for two, glued wood construction, and great sailing performance.

21 ft Masthead Sloop, Design #112

Construction: Strip planked/cold molded

Here is a design for a small sailboat with excellent performance and the capability to cruise safely in coastal waters. The British client intends to make crossings to France and to Ireland, and needed a boat capable of beating to windward in adverse conditions. She contains all the essentials: two berths, head, galley and inboard engine in just 21 feet. Construction is strip planking with an overlay of cold molded veneer for a tight, strong hull that is quick and simple to build. A good first time project.

This design was featured in WoodenBoat Number 155, July/August 2000.
